Can anyone tell me what the air pump is used for on the non emissions UK spec RX7 FCs?

I've got a 1988 S4 and eventually I want to get rid of some clutter from the engine bay, but not without knowing how it all works.

Being a distributor based system with no cat, most of the manuals online are incorrect, but luckily I found that the 1986 Training Manual gives most the details of the car.

So normally the air pump would be used for the secondary air injection, but of course this car never actually came with a cat.

The 6 port actuation is done by manifold vacuum, according to the training manual (as per attached diagram).

The oil metering pump is the mechanical type.

What am I missing here?

your car likely had the thermal reactor system of the earlier cars, the pump was used as air injection for that afterburner type system. i do not know if your car has vacuum or pressure secondaries, as the pump helps open the auxiliaries on USDM models.

 

I think you maybe right, did some more digging. The attached photo is my exhaust system, I have the small air relief pipe that comes out next to my left hand backbox, sorry muffler!

As the OMP is a mechanical type, and assuming that the auxilary ports are closed by manifold vaccum pressure, there no reason why I can't delete the whole air pump and associated solenoids and cap off the system?
