i have a ground wire on the very top of the bell housing. it has a harness on the free end and a ring terminal on the end bolted to the tranny.. what does this connect to ?? i cant find a free wire anywhere

 

connects to the "tang" that should be bolted to the firewall, just right of engine centerline...if you can't find it, just clean a spot down to bare metal and bolt it to an existing hole in the firewall (protect any bare metal areas still showing after the bolt is installed)
