Yeah, I'd say your bushings are toast. I hate that sloppy feel.

my bushings have been shot since before i bought my S... there is about 153k on the entire car, save for the typical wear items like belts, hoses, plugs, wires, tires, clutches, etc... the bushings, im venturing a guess, are non-existant in my S. when in gear, the shifter can move fore, aft, and side to side as if it were in neutral. and the shifter also rotates a good 30* on its vertical axis, as if the locating pin on the ball was F-d up. but, the shifter wont move up and down on the vertical axis though, like my S4 was when tehre was no blue or white bushing in the tower.

im going to order my SS clutch line and these bushings from mazdatrix. with all the bushings i need, the freakin order comes out to $33.62, BEFORE shipping... this car is eating a hole in my wallet.

Kingofl337 Anyone know if you can swap the miata shifter for the rx-7? The trannies are supposed to be based off the same design. It would be like a cheap short shifter kit.

Yup. It's in the 2nd gen archives. More room for the stereo!!

I took my shifter apart, and sure enough, only the top bushing is left. Where does all the old bushings go, do they collect down in the oil? That cant be good. I also noticed the shifter pivot below is loose to the touch, is it supposed to be firm and springy?

Yeah, they do sink to the bottom, but it really can't go anywhere.
It's not like the trans fluid circulates - it doesn't.
You don't really need to worry about them bits.

yeah, sometimes the wave spring washer gimmick will fall ldown there too. when its all apart, just try to fish out the crap. i just ordered the pivot thingy and the lower nylon cap. thats really the only source of play in the shifter. the upper and lower bushings seem to be in good shapes. my shipment just went out today from mazdatrix

you know whats gay? i ordered the new lower shifter bushing that sits down on the tip of the shifter, for my S5. apparantly they either sent me one for an FD or an S4, cuz the bushing is way too small to fit on the lower ball of my S5 shifter. i was quite furious because i wanted my shifter to work RIGHT and i tore my shifter apart to install it in the parking lot of auto zone in the ghetto of Ocala, during the D1GP.

sooo. now, i hear that the S5 shifter bushing that goes on the bottom of the stick is unavailable and im SOL. i dont know if i have to call mazdatrix to rip them a new one and spend $4 + packaging to ship back the wrong item, or what.

wtf mate.

anyone know if the S5 lower bushing is still available for sure? or do i need an FD shifter or what.
