proud new owner of a second generation rx7
Hey everyone, my names John, I just bought my first 86 rx7 and i'm in LOVE with it. There's plenty of problems with it but i'm working on it every day to get it up and running fine since i will have to begin commuting to school with it in october. I've done a number of things already to get it going, the main thing i need to do now is clean the fuel injectors.... i'm hoping some fuel injector cleaner in my gas will do the job but i'm hearing it doesn't work too good. Worst comes to worst i'll take em out and replace them. It won't idle, it flucuates up and down between 1 and 1.5 when it's attempting to idle, and then it stalls out. When i drive it, it bucks a lot and black smoke comes out the tail pipes and my neighbor told me that is a sign of the fuel injectors.... i'm open to any other suggestions too. thanks a lot guys and i look forward to being apart of the club. btw, i put new spark plugs in, new thermostat and air filter(had a mice nest in it), and there seems to be no leaks in any hoses so i can only assume it's the injectors... it was sitting in a garage for two years before i got to it. thanks for any input! I've got pics but don't know how to post them yet.

Replace all fluids in the car
Replace all brake lines with SS braided
change fuel filter
change pulsation dampner
change oil lines to SS braided
change brake pads mayb to some Hawk HP
thats about all i can think off of the top of my head but theres more to it...

John,
Welcome to the club! I've found a lot of solutions and suggestions from a lot of the people on this forum. I'm sure that you will too.
One of the challenges of owning an RX-7 is getting everything working the way it's supposed to work.
I bought an '88 NA (normally aspirated or non-turbo) convertible (frequently called a "vert" here on this forum (and elsewhere, I'm sure) with some of the same problems you're experiencing with yours.
Through a combination of the suggestions I've found here, some common sense, a bit of mechanical and electrical aptitude and fortuitous discoveries on my own, I've now got a car that runs nicely and is a blast to drive!
One of the problems I had when I bought my car was that it was difficult to start and maintain idle when it was cold, when it did warm up, it would idle at 1200 rpm despite all my attempts at adjustment. I found out that the water temperature sensor plays a major role in the cold idle equation. So, thinking a different one was the answer, I went to the salvage yard and found one. When I disconnected the plug, (which is located at the rear of the thermostat housing) about 4 inches of wire from beneath the "dynamic chamber" (throttle body-abbrev. TB) came off with it. I shouldn't have been surprised; a lot of the wiring was faulty from both age, heat, and the previous owners' "modifications". I pulled off the throttle body and spliced new wire in the vacant spot. While I had the TB off, I replaced, with silicon vacuum hose, the brittle rubber vacuum hoses that thereby became easily accessible.
After I reinstalled the TB and cranked the engine, I was actually able to adjust the idle and the throttle position sensor (TPS) which, when out of adjustment, is, I think, responsible for the bucking you've experienced). My tasks completed, the engine idles beautifully, doesn't buck, accelerates more responsively and its gas mileage has improved noticeably.
It might be worth your while to check the items on your car that required repair on mine.
Once again, welcome to the RX-7 club and best of luck!

You have a VAC leak. www.mazdatrix.com you can order new silicone hoses there. Replace them one by one!
Take your injectors out and bring them to a shop that cleans and rebuilds injectors. Crusin performance will do it for 50$ if there is no shops in your area.
View the FAQ and do a 60k tuneup!
Check set / replace as needed - Water Thermo sensor, TPS, BACV

thanks guys for all the good input you've given me already, i had a feeling that my idling problem had to do with the electrical in the ignition system because the exhaust was making more of a glugging noise rather than a purring noise..... this lead me to think that since there's black smoke coming out that the fuel injectors were dirty and the cumbustion was poor.... but after thinking on it for a day.... it came to me that if it wasn't firing right then that would cause all of the problems and noises that i'm experiencing. so i pulled all the plugs and removed the coils to which they plugged into.... the last plug i pulled had some real bad corrosion in it..... blue powder pouring out as i pulled the plug off and when i looked into the plug wire the metal end was completely deteriorated and the layer of blue powder between the plug wire and top of coil couldn't help much either.... so i bought new plugs last night.... i was going to buy a new coil until i found out it was $127.00 at cap, so i'm going to try to clean it out and hope for the best that it's not wasted and that the new wires will do the job. i'll keep you guys posted..... also, can someone tell me how to post pictures?
