PROS/CONS of 192F T-stat & 16PSI RAD CAP

I have my own ideas, would like to hear some opinions from the Forum.

Track driven car, but not a trailer queen.

Hot weather area.

what exactly do you mean by 192F thermostat? Is that the full open temperature? What is the cracking-open temperature? The factory thermostat cracks open at 180F and opens fully at 203F. How hot is your car running?

192F t-stat opens at 192, just keeps the car at a higher operating temp, it is an option for our cars

car runs fine, just looking to improve.... always

I don't understand the description. Is this a race car or a street car?

I think it is a bad idea to change to the hotter thermostat. First of all, you would need to retune the engine for the higher operating temperature. Secondly, you would increase the chance of knocking. Additionally, the engine normally operates at about 185F, and damage can occur if the temperature jumps to 200F very quickly, so a 192F thermostat doesn't sound like such a good idea. Full-race rotary engines have a competition water pump with no thermostat, or a stock water pump with a gutted thermostat body and a plugged bypass hole, so I don't see much competitive value in running a very hot engine despite the theoretical thermodynamic gain. Finally, if the bypass type thermostat doesn't open correctly, it can cause a 20-30% loss in cooling capacity. Read more here:

Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development recommends a radiator cap no more than 17-18psi, so 16psi sounds fine to me if your system is in good shape. You should register with them so you can get a discount on parts. They can also help you with some technical questions like this.

Also, some racers use Evans NPG+ coolant with a reduced pressure cap or a zero-pressure cap.

Did you know that we have a racing subforum?
