ohh ya, before my temp. guage quit working maybe 4 days ago?
it read 1/4 of the way to Hot... thats pretty good to me... but how would you keep the seals from carroding?

 

If the Previous owner took care of it you should be fine engine wise just don't be surprised if other things wear out.
When I sold my car it had 198K on it and was running great, it had been through nitrous and hellacious beatings.
Just stay on top of the fluids, all of them. If you havent yet, change the oil, the coolant, PS fluid if the car has it, the Tranny oil, and the diff oil.
If it's an 86-88 car the temp guage shoudl stay around 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up. if its 89-91 it should stay around the middle.

I support the redline it often theory, its bad for piston motors, but good for rotaries because it prevents sludge, carbon and it keeps the oil flowing through the engine well. A redline is not bad for a rotary especially an N/A. If the previous owner didnt drive the car spirited, gently build it up over a week or two. Don't just start beating on it.

Some things you might want to do too are , change the shifter bushing sand replace the rubber shifter boots, check and replace the tranny and engine mounts if necessary and pay attention to the Diff mount, if it starts clunking, replace it.
Also, if its an 86-88 have your closest rotary shop or mazda dealer replace the fuel pulsation dampener. If you don't theres a possibility your car could commit a fiery suicide.


When it comes down to it, Stay on top of the fluids, and drive the car spirited, you should be good. Don't use synthetic oil in your engine, use castrol GTX 20W50 in the summer and 10W40 in the winter. Change it evey 3k, you can do it earlier if you're paranoid but 3K is good. Check it every 1kmiles too.

Also, Read the FAQ thoroughly, get yourself a haynes manual on the car and find a factory service manual on the internet for reference.

If you take care of the car, it will take you places, if you don't it will break.

 

First thing is get rid of the 2 precats. They make the engine work harder.
2 Add CAI or A K&N drop in filter. Helps it breathe better. I don't know if this will help reliability but it will help the engine breathe.
Change all fluids and filters if you haven't changed Them yet.

Are you expecting kids? Compared to most other sports cars I've seen with comparable power and weight, RX-7's get good fuel mileage and the maintenance really isn't any worse than most other sports cars. All they need is enough room for a back seat and a whole family could fit. Granted that'll change the whole weight/MPG/performance balance.

Even if I had a family, I'd still keep the car as a daily driver to work.

 

Easy to breathe means better fuel mileage. I get 25-27 in my '91 NA.
