project 10AE : Turbo questions

I'm working on my turbo project. My goal is 350-400hp. To acheive this I will use a street port 89+ block, haltech, and T04. Since I'm very new to turbo's I have a few (actually a lot) questions.

Basicly what I'm looking for is the specs of the turbo that would best meet my needs. I want something with as little lag as possible, ofcourse.
How much boost will I need to run to achieve my goal?

What about a wastegate? What are the different kinds and what would be better for my aplication? I've read about the tail wastegate
( http://www.angelfire.com/me2/tpi/index.html ) and heard good things about them. Can/sould I use one of these. They seem to be very well priced. If not then what?

thats all for now.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike, we should probably end up comparing notes. My 10th AE that I recently bought is currently under the knife. Here is my list of mods:

Wolf 3D v4.0 (waiting for it to arrive)
Garrett 60-1 HiFi
GReddy/Trust FMIC
550 primary/1600 secondary injectors
Trust 40mm wastegate (open air vented)
XS Engineering Type H BOV
TB mod
3" DP/MP
Apexi N1 single
All emissions removed
HKS EVC I (unless the Wolf can do a good job controlling boost)
GReddy boost gauge
Wolf A/F gauge
Stock ported motor (will be rebuilding an extra motor this spring)

With these mods, I will/should be at 400 flywheel EASY. I'm planning on running about 1 bar of boost.

The 60-1 turbo is great! I ran it for a while with the stock ECU and an AIC III, and I loved it! The boost starts building around 4000 RPMs or so. Trust me. . .it's not as bad as it might sound. When the turbo hits, it hits hard. (That's a good thing. . .)

Dale Clark of Pensacola is running this same turbo, and he's part of the reason I chose it. VERY driveable, and GREAT power.

As far as the wastegate, you'll hear varying opinions. Personally, I haven't had any problems with the 40mm Trust WG I have. Mine is vented to open air, so at 9 psi (or whatever I have the boost controller set at), it starts releasing the excess to atmosphere. Yes, it's pretty LOUD! But I like it.

Just don't go any smaller than a 40mm, and you should be fine. Open-air or plumbed back into the system is up to you.

Just my $.02 Hope to hear from you

Thanks Reese,
Thanks for the info.
Your right about comparing notes, but it sounds like you are a lot farther into your project than I am. I'm about to start ripping my car apart. I'm going to strip it almost all the way down and completely rebuild it. I'm ordering a J-spec motor this month and when I get it I'm going to rebuild it with new rotor housings, seals, and a street port.

I am completely turbo illiterate. Whats the difference between the T04 and the 60-1.

My buddy has a 1st gen with a 13BT in it with a wastegate vented into the air. It is LOUD! I will want mine vented into the exhaust.

Thanks,
Mike

60-1 and T04E are 2 diffferent compressor trims made by Garrett. The 60-1 flows more air (about 100 more lb/min), but is less efficient than the T04E series of compressors.

I'd go with a T04E for better efficiency (the more efficient the cooler the charge, the more power).

There's lot of turbo threads out there - search for them.&nbsp There are a bunch in the Single Turbo section.

"T04" is a generic term for a family of Garret turbos.&nbsp "T04E" is a sub-set of the "T04" family.&nbsp The other popular sub family is the "T04B".
