Problem w/ starting

Since the cold weather started to come in, I noticed my 7 had a lil bit of a hard time starting...I just got the car so naturally I changed out the coolant w/ prestone 50/50.

the first time I started the car after changing the coolant, the car had an extremely hard time starting and I had to give it a lot of gas to get it running, a few seconds after it started running the car started backfiring like crazy so I turned it off and tried starting it again...same problem, had to give it gas just to get it running...but no backfires. car drove fine after that

this morning, it starts up with a lil trouble, but not as much as last night. engine runs fine on the way to class...about 1.5hrs later i go to start it up again and it requires me to give it more gas and once i get it running it starts backfiring like crazy again...so i repeat what i did last night, turn it off and restart it and no backfires...and it runs fine on the way back home

now for a lil background on the engine...i bought the car almost a week ago, previous owner said it had a bad motor and that it would smoke @ anything over 3k, i figured bad oil seals and maybe apex seals...so it's pretty much been driven under 3k since at least april, which means a lot of carbon buildup. Since i've gotten it i've brought the rpm's up to about 6k maybe 5 or 6 times in attempts to break some of the carbon up [mind you, I plan on having the motor rebuilt within a week] And I redlined it last night..today it feels much more responsive and it seems to accelerate much better, I think I might've had a carbon locked housing [if that's possible...i'm still new to rotaries] and I broke it free during the redline.

but any info on why all the backfires all of the sudden would be appreciated...sorry for the novel

also, I was planning on doing the atf trick to try and decresease the amount of carbon in the motor
