price estimate on an 88 gxl.. please.

First off, I was not sure where to post exactly, so forgive me ahead of time if this is the wrong section. I take no offense if this is moved.

I'm looking to see what you all would pay for my fc, though it is not for sale yet.

I am the second owner, as I purchased it just over a month ago from the original family. NO accidents whatsoever. I have receipts for nearly $7k of parts and labor in the last few years to keep it above par. That doesn't include normal maintenance.
1988 white GXL, 2+2, 5 speed with 255,xxx miles, and ONLY 5,000 on a brand new CRATE motor from mazda.
This car runs GREAT.
Good tires
Good brakes
It has an HKS intake ($200) and Greddy Power Extreme catback ($1200 receipt).
New tranny with 60k miles.
Differential and Driveshaft replaced 20k miles ago
New Radiator (stock)
Intrax lowering springs and Tokico Shocks
Just replaced shifter bushings.
It also includes a sony CD player and a new sound system.

Now with the issues...
2 white paint chips - headlight cover and a portion 1/2 foot long below hatch
Windshield wipers only work on fast setting.
Dashlights don't work - currently trying to fix
Tail lights work fine, but with the flick of a switch
Leather seats are cracked up
Sunroof works fine, but you have to push up to get it going

That nearly covers all of it, so I'd appreciate it if you all could give me an estimate on its value.

Thanks all!

due to mileage $3k tops(some people may pay more, people will pay what it is worth to them but my figure is a ballpark average)

if you strip out and part out the car you would probably get more than that if the engine still has some sort of warranty.

unfortunately even in mint condition the car still has 255k miles on it which means it has just begun to start breaking things.

you are better off just keeping it since it has that many miles and live with the quirks it develops and fix the minor ones you can't live without fixing since it sounds like you are paying someone an arm and a leg to maintain this thing.

wow, you were being nice Ben. I wouldn't say more than $1000 just because of the miles on the body and the wipers/dashlights/seats being messed up.

5000 miles on a new motor means nothing when all those bushings and rubber and everything else is so worn out.

For a Good condition 88 as per Edmunds:
Dealer trade in: $509
Private party: $1,186
Dealer Retail: $2,331

and lets face it... good condition does not mean needs new seat covers or having dash lights you can't see at night.

i was assuming the body was still in perfect condition, FCs still have decent resale since kids want them these days.

your prices are always a little unrealistically low Mark, mainly i speak for california you can't find a car like that for $1k, if it was listed even with the problems it would get bought in 10 seconds or flipped and the price doubled and people would still pay it. the $3k figure was a bit on the high end though just to give a little hope.

I think the difference in my prices is my price's are what people actually pay for the car after haggling.

As opposed to what people ask for the car before haggling.

So, if I was selling the car, I might ask $2000, but then expect to actually sell the car at $1000-$1200.

And I know of a couple S4 cars right now for sale with far fewer miles on them and better interior condition with people asking $1500.

Sort of like my vert a couple years back, when I bought it.

The guy was asking $3800 for it. I bought it for $2500...

The $7k in parts and labor I referred to earlier was not due to failure in the car, it was to replace anything and everything that had a possibility of failing within the future. I will be fixing the dash lights, and replacing the seats... after that would the price go up much?

honestly one of the biggest turn off for potential buyers is the bad paint. The only thing i can think of that supercedes that is rust.

so get the paint chips fixed
ever notice everyone wants pics when a car is for sale? looks are a big deal.

both those would radically help.

But with those perfect you still would be lucky to get $2k.

btw: The wiper switch needs rebuilding. I have that service available on my website, as well as the headlight switch is probably burnt up, and will need replacing. I have rebuilt headlight switches also available, however chances are very high that you will also need a new light switch harness which is available from Mazda or Mazdatrix. Do not use a new or rebuilt headlight switch with a damaged harness.

Yeah..I'd say $2500 TOPS. 255k is a SHITLOAD of miles...and...at the end of the day..it's an NA, man.

maybe it is just because i know how a poorly maintained engine will crap out when you blink an eye.

if i was looking for a 7 i would much prefer one with a new motor, and a mazda reman is about as good of a motor as you will get for a reliably built motor.

*shrug*

yes the miles kill the value but to me i would much rather point someone to this car than to one with 100k on the original motor for the same price.
