Pressing in rear wheel bearings...

*sigh*

I replaced the rear wheel bearings on my old RX-7 before parting it out. As I needed it rolling, I couldn't take them off the car.

$40 per bearing+$10 per seal+$75 per side labor to get them pressed in=way too much to send to the junkyard.

I've never done any pressing...if I did, I would have to rig something up, and even then, I'd be pissed if I screwed up those hella expensive bearings.

I'd like to ship them to somebody with a press, but I don't know how much round trip shipping would be. I guess if I can fit them into a flat rate box, 4x flat rate boxes should only be $40 or so.

Anyone want to do this for me+a couple bucks for your time? Any advice?

All the machine shops around here wanted $75 a side or something retarded like that.

They want $75 a side because its a bit of a pain in the ***, and the carriers have got be one of the most awkward things to get setup on the press to begin with.

Next - you won't be abel to remove the old bearings (which if I'm reading this correctly are new) from the old carrier and salvage them. Its just not possible. They are sealed bearings and when you press the flange out of the center, the inner race comes out of the bearing.

If you want to keep them just take them (the entire carrier assemblies) off once the car gets to the junkyard and install the entire carrier on whatever car you're needing them for.

EDIT: And these bearings aren't expensive. Buy a Sebring, replace a set of wheel bearings, and then try that comment

I'm sorry...the old car+bearings are long gone. my current RX-7 needs bearings. I shouldn't have thrown that part about the old car in there, does nothing but confuse people.

so I won't be able to do it myself and I should have someone do it? lol, better sell more plasma.

I did my own just because I am stubborn, mule headed idiot. Will never try that again, $75 per side is super cheap as far as I'm concerned.

Well to answer your question - You can do it yourself, its really not that hard. The only thing is you **need** a press. If you don't have a press then I'd say just take it somewhere (or try to buy a press for the cost of paying a shop )

I've used a large vice with appropriately sized sockets to press the bearings in.

Bearings for the 7 are cheap, and their replaceable. My damn Cavalier doesn't have replaceable bearings, Chevy makes you buy the whole hub which is $75+ per corner.
