Prepping Engine Bay for Painting

My question is this, what is the best way to remove and block off the two tube endings coming out of the passenger side firewall? I believe they were for the air conditioning unit whch has been removed.

Also, I would appreciate it if someone could recommend a quality primer to be used on this project. I do have several areas of bare metal that I would like to primer before I spray it.

Thanx for your help,

Michael

As for the 2 tubes sticking out? Yes, they are for the A/C. If you really wanted to be gung-ho about it, you could just pull out the A/C "core" from the inside of the car underneath the dash, but let me tell you..........taking it out is not for the impatient!!! Expect to spend some "quality time" taking it out (I'm talking hours to do it correctly and reassemble everything)!!! I would highly suggest just cutting those tubes off if you are DEFINITE that you will not be re-installing the A/C and using it in the near future.

^ What about collecting the R12? My system is fully charged still, and I want to take it out (I never use it anyway, and I want to pull the AC compressor and PS pump to move my alt.). I have gotten called crazy and such for this fact, but why have the extrea weight for something I don't use? It really hurts me to just let something that's ~$40 a can out and onto the ground (r12 is heavier than air, how the EPA says it hurts the ozone...don't get me started). I called my local AC shop to see what they would do, but they want to charge me ~$80 to pull it and clean it, then resell for ~$120 (the guy told me this over the phone. word for word: "I'm in the business to make money, kid." WTF???).

Any ideas?
