Question Pre Tranny conversion question from a relitave noob...

I searched, but I couldn't find the information I was looking for. (I bet you havn't heard that one before)

I'm heading for the pick-n-pull this weekend to get all the fixins to replace my broke AT with a stick (5sp, not a piece of wood). Can someone tell me what to check to make sure the tranny is good?

Thanks

Nothing much you can do at the yard. Make sure it turns smoothly, it shifts, and there's no excessive noise, but that's about it. Once you get it in the car, you could find out that all it's bearing and 2nd gear syncro are bad (not uncommon).

I would highly suggest making sure it is covered under warrenty before you leave the lot.

Better yet, go to the Parts For Sale section of this site, and buy one from someone who took it out of his car and can vouch for its condition. Buy one without knowing anything about it is risky. You may wind up doing the job more than once.

That's what I was thinking, but I'm doing the swap because the AT broke, and it's my daily driver. I have two weeks off for Xmas, but I need the car ASAP.

Thanks for your help, both of you.

I just bought a parts car. I payed $100 for an '87 TII. Pulled all the swap parts needed. And sold the rest of the car online and made my money back 2 fold.

What I'd really like to do is swap my good engine into a good body w/ tranny, but the death of my AT has made it urgent. If there's anyone in the SF bay area selling a parts car with a nice body and tranny... (yes, I already posted a WTB in the classified section.)

Thanks for mentioning that I need tons of other parts Krazy. I already did the research and have a shopping list for the junk yard, but always good to remind people, right?

I'll find out on Saturday and post the bill for all the parts when I get home.
