If the motor is running, the most likely problems are the cables, gearbox or sliders. It is necessary to pull the headliner and the sunroof frame depending on what it turns out to be.It's lots of fun-check the Mazda manual for directions.

Ya mine does the same thing. Previous owner said it was just the cables but I never got around to changing it. Looks like a big pain in the ***.

Have you tried helping it along by hand?

Every spring I have to help mine pop up the first time.

perhaps the previous owner sealed it shut lol...Most people do that when they start to rust and leak.

Other then that, There is a hand crank thing you can try.

Yah i agree with the post before... My buddy has had 5 86 rx7's and every time he had to give a little helping hand with the sunroof... mine has the same problem... When your pressing the button just press up a little bit with your hand on the sunroof and it should just pop open...

I used to have to push my moonroof. up with my hand. But then I realized it was just the weather stripping being wedged between the moonroof and actual roof. So one day I popped it up and took a BIc razor and shaved the weather stripping until it wasn't thick enough to get stuck. Not it opens wonderfully everytime. And NO leaks.
