You need more than the rack, there's a mount that's different too.

You don't need a manual rack if you wanna ditch PS either, there's another option. Take out all the PS stuff and then plug the 3 threaded holes with bolts leaving a little (not completely full!!) PS fluid in the rack.

This is what I did, I daily drive my car and park in a college parking lot, no problems.

hey, i am ditching my PS for MS because i've gone through two pumps. anyway, i got the rack, from endlink to endlink with mounting stuff and single AC bracket at a local junkyard (only 40 bucks!). im assuming its basically swap in and run kind of a deal. should i replace those grease filled little bushings on the endlinks too? is it better to just use the endlinks off my current car instead of using the ones on the rack already?

"end links"? you talking about the tie rod ends? if so use the ones that have the least amount of play--jeremie

what would be the effects of just cutting the belt? would the car still be diveable?

it would actually be harder, because your pushing against the fluid stil in the system

Yes, but it's not the same as removing the whole PS assembly completely.

but i would still get the same desired affect right? i mean ill still be able to drive around normally and all that good stuff right?

reason why im asking is because i dont wanna totaly eliminate my power steering. its leaking and dirty and squiking and i dont want it, so my other option is to just cut the damn belt.

could you simply elaborate more on how it wont be the same? would it be harder to turn even when moving?

Yes you can still drive around normally until you fix the problem or decide to remove it completely.

If the tie rod ends have play in them, they should be replaced. Be warned that the ends for the manual rack are diffferent than on the power rack. Also, IIRC the left and right side ends are actually different part numbers on the manual rack.

Check the online parts fiche to verify.

Good luck,

-bill

I removed the PS and daily drive the PS rack as a manual. It's not bad but I'm thinking of switching to a manual rack and then getting an aftermarket steering wheel that is smaller than stock to bring the ratio back towards 2.7 turns lock-to-lock. I've heard from some people that some track inspectors frown upon converting a PS rack to manual.

You don't want to just remove the belt and leave all that fluid in there, its not the same and really hard to drive. You can try it out and see for yourself.
BTW, why would you CUT the belt? Just remove it properly.

Manual steering on an RX7 isnt bad at all. My first 7 didnt have PS and neither did my dad's 7. Both were easy to turn...even when going very slow in a parking lot. I DID put a PS in my 2nd 7, but I really didnt notice a huge difference. (**NOTE** it is MUCH harder to replace the rack when the engine is and everything under the hood is still intact...it took me no time at all to get the manual rack out, but the PS rack was a PITA to get in!) Im going to MS when I do a rebuild in the coming years. Id rather have the room to work than the little bit of ease it creates.

yes, i guess i meant the tie rods. i took everything as one piece from the junk so i have all the little hardware too. what do you mean by endplay in the tie rods? its able to move around? i didn't mess with the tie rods so they are all on there pretty tight. i checked the haynes manual but it doesn't say much about the tie ends.

as for just taking the belt off for the PS. im doing that now until i have time to swap in the manual steering rack. i don't want the PS to leak everywhere on my new rebuild. its not that hard to drive it, even in slow stop-n-goes. it may take some getting used to but its good work out anyway. your left arm usually doesn't get as much excercise as the right arm so i'll even it out (my excuse).
