I drove a 89 with it removed.... it sucked ass. Keep the PS.

Common question. Use FAQ and search. Proper way to do it is to swap in the manual rack. Just disabling the pump will make steering an even greater pain than getting the manual rack. Even then it will be tiring to turn at low speeds & stops, but you'll get slightly better feel at higher speeds. Not worth it for most.

I never had PS to start with. Wonder how it feels with it :|

I have a friend with an 86 GXL that has a non PS rack and it felt great. The power steering (at least the cheap RPM sensing ones) tend to hydro lock when steering fast, like for a slalom. With a manual rack you can feel the tires better and theres pretty much no hydrolocking. I drove a base model with it and didn't even know that it didn't have PS. Unless the car is a daily I'd swap in a non PS 15:1 (S4) ratio rack, the power steering racks are unpredictable and I'm often limited by the PS rack's ability to take fast steering input in technical courses.

I mean power wise, does it help HP, acceleration, gas milage. I look and that didnt even explain anything that i just asked. I dont care how it feels, i want to know if it would make my car boog down.

Since it doesn't work above 40MPH and is at less than half power at above 15 MPH, it doesn't really effect HP, acceleration or gas mileage.

fc3sdude 02-18-08 10:37 PM

Ok well that is weird but would it make my car sludge down.

Icemark 02-18-08 11:19 PM

sludge would be from crappy oil that was overheated.

Idle issues or low speed issues that appear to be power steering related can be related to a poor or mis-adjusted TPS, a bad or missing BAC valve or a disconnected or missing AWS solenoid.

fc3sdude 02-19-08 11:10 AM

Alright, well what is a AWS solenoid, and i have read how to adjust tps, but i dont understand it.

KhanArtisT 02-20-08 08:28 AM

Taken from the FAQ abbreviations AWS = Accelerated Warm-Up System, I have no idea where its located though so check the FSM or search for it. To adjust the TPS forget about the stupid bulb way and buy a multimeter from a local parts store. Hook it up to the right pins (as shown in how-to) on the TPS connector and adjust the screw so it reads 1000 ohms at idle and 5000 ohms at WOT.

And you asked

And thats exactly what I answered, it won't affect HP, gas mileage or acceleration so I didn't mention it. Your car will probably rev quicker though due to having one less pulley to spin and your throttle response might increase because of this.

fc3sdude 02-20-08 11:38 AM

Ohhh ok well thanks.
