Power Loss While Braking

88 SE

Usually only happens when my lights are on as well as the stereo blasting (well, a little above normal volume).

I push down the brake and watch my Volt gauge go down a little bit (below 14, a little above 12). Also, my stereo seems to start to die (fade like) and/or cut off for a second while this is happening.

I'm assuming this is an electrical problem, but not sure where this is occuring. It only happens when I push on the brake, so maybe some wire along there, I dunno.

Just need some input on what could be the problem and how I would go about fixing it.

Thx guys.

Sounds like your alternator cannot keep up with the additional load. Either test it yourself or yank it and take it somewhere to be tested. Our alternators suck even when brand new. When they start to die, it is very noticeable.

Before you start replacing alternators, check all your ground and battery connections, as well as the + lead to the alternator. Have your battery tested (perhaps it is shorted internally). Clean your BAC valve as well.

Grounds are located on the drivers shock tower, and under the lower intake near the coolant neck. Those are the most important. Check + connections at alternator, main fuse, battery, etc.

could also be a small short on one of the hot wires going to the brake lights....that would cause excessive voltage use when applied.
