Power loss and eratic

Please help, i have an 88 with a 13B N/A engine.

whilst driving the other night my car started losing power on the freeway, eventually it would not go faster than 5 MPH. when i pulled over it had no problem idling or starting. it was towed home.

The next day i started up the car and i drove it up the road. it had the same eratic action but it was driving normally then i started seeing the symptoms from the night before so i turned around and came home.

I cleaned the plugs, which were not to bad. had the car serviced by an Mazda specialist not so many miles ago.

It starts up fine, the automatic choke kicks in takes it up to the quick warm up smoothly and then it comes down to idle as normal.

It feels as if there is more vibration than normal, but then again i have been driving another car for the last few days.

please help i want to keep this Heirloom (my late father in laws car) alive.

It sounds like either:

1. fuel supply problem...clogged fuel filter and/or failing fuel pump
or
2. an exhaust restriction... most likely a clogged catalytic converter

Also check the coolant sensor in the water pump housing and its clip.

I had kinda the same problem with mine... It was driving fine, then when I came back from a week vacation I went to start it but it didn't start the normal way. I drove it around and the second day, i had no power, bogging all over, and eventually it didn't start.

I thought it was the fuel pump. So I got rid of the old stock fuel pump and put a warblo. I still had the same problem. It turned out to be he clip that connects to the coolant sensor. Ohh well, I got a nice upgrade in the process.

good luck,
eric

Worst case: http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/blown.htm

But don't assume it's blown. As well as what is mentioned above, ignition problems and fuel problems can be the cause. Make sure you have good spark at all the plugs. Injectors can occasionally become very sticky and get stuck open or closed. Do you have any black smoke coming from the exhaust?

no black smoke, just the ussual amount. it does smell a bit different, i thought maybe it was just miss firing and it was the unburnt fuel.

i will check for all suggested so far.

thankyou guys.

p.s could it be a block injector and is there a way to test for it.

The only real way to test for a bad injector is to pull the fuel rail and pressurize the system.
