Question Powder Coat Wheels?

Got a set of 16" Turbo wheels that I'm going to run with RA-1's for track use for my 87 Tll. Problem is they are absolutely filthy, and the inside of the wheels are badly oxidizes (dark grey). Spent hours cleaning one with wheel cleaner and 'Metal Wax' metal cleaner and , and they only look so-so. Structurally they are OK with a couple of minor 'dings' here and there on the lips.

Wheel rebuild shop wants $400 to sandblast, repair, repaint all four.

Also found a powder coat shop that will sandblast and powdercoat (no repair)(inside/outside complete) for $250.

Anyone had their wheels powdercoated, and what did you think of the results??

Jim

I had my wheels powdercoated satin black, and its made the biggest difference on how my car looks. Not only do they look great, their easier to keep clean, no oxidation or anything. $250 is a decent price

I've bought powdercoated wheels and powdercoated some of my own. Its the only way to go unless you like to polish. 250 cdn sounds like a bargain for powdercoating.

haha, I love how your car shows you don't need neon to have a good looking car

Powdercoating is awesome if its done right, im pretty sure the lifetime on it is much much longer than regular paint

86GXL...Car looks great!! Mine is red so its a little harder to match color than with white. I've still got black trim so I'll probably go with a contrasting color.

Are those Fitipaldi's??? They look suspiciously like the 15"rs I have on my GX.

repair the rims your self first if it mean just sanding and grinding at some nicks and what not just get the big stuff out the sandblasting won't take care of. also i know most shops that powdercoat would know but they will need to bead blast the wheels not sand sand will eat through the soft aluminum

if they are just light nicks or scratches you dont need to get them repaired, the powdercoating will cover it up pretty good. I'm taking my wheels to get powdercoated and the guy is charging me $200 for all 4.

I've seen powdercoated wheels and they look pretty good, but I've also seen spray painted wheels and they look equally as good when done right.

hondahater - pretty much exactly the look I had in mind. Plain silver? or silver metallic? High gloss?

87GXL Thanks ...I'll PM him.

FYI...OZ made Fitipalldi's. They were considered pretty good about 12 yrs ago. Yours look a little thicker where the spokes join the rims...but maybe its just the distance of your pics, or the wheel size.

Yeah those look like them only mine are 15 inch. Thats probably why they look thicker. But they only weigh ~14 - 15 pounds. And mine are 5 lug. haha

Actually, those are 15" too...used them with 205/50 Toyo RA-1's on the track.

Got two sets of 5 lugs (16"'s and 17"s) for the turbo (check sig)(hahaha), and two sets of 4 lugs(15's and 16's) for the GX (CDN), not to mention the 'snows' for my daily driver. Single car garage...wheels everywhere!

PM'd RXTASY...thanks for the lead!
