Talking Post-TB Mod Write-up

This was truly my first DIY mod I ever performed. Sure I've done the normal maintenance stuff before, but never something like this. Well, I put my Turbo Timer in myself. =) Anyways, if I sound like newB, it's because I am. It took three days of patience and many cigarettes. But, it was all worthed, now I can't wait til I get my dp and cat replacement. Mad props to Ted at fc3s-pro.com for the detailed instructions on this mod.

Sunday
I decide to take the tap n plug route and take a trip to home depot and pep boys first thing in the morning. I buy all the stuff needed. The plugs i found were bolt type, so it wouldn't be flush against the TB, but it would never get sucked it. =) Ididn't find any 90* 5/16 hose, so I bought the metal fittings/tee/etc to make a 90* along with two 2' 5/16 hose.
IC comes off w/o a problem. But it takes me about 2 hours to take the TB out. I never saw the long bolt on the UIM. After removing that bolt, removing the TB went smoothly. I took careful notice of the coolant hoses n the vaccum lines I was removing.the manifold was saturated with carbon build up, and the secondary chambers of TB didn't look too good either. I decide that I will clean the UIM some other time.
I brought the TB into the house and pulled up fc3s-pro.com. I began to take **** off until I ran into that notorious screw holding the throttle spring arm. It was already hald way stripped and it took me one attempt to render it useless. The $9 extractor kit ended up being useless so I continued to drill. The extractor managed to extract the head of the screw, so I continued on w/ the mod. 3 of the 4 screws holding the plates onto the shaft seized/stripped on me. Spent time to drill them out. After that removing the shaft assembly was a snap.
Tapping the holes was easy enough. The plug fit perfectly into the hole in the rear of the TB; but it was a little loose in the front. There was nothing more I could do that day.

Monday
I took the TB with me to school (lincoln tech, LOL) and on the way I bought some JB Weld. At school, I cleaned the TB and JB welded the throttle spring arm back in place and some on the bolt plug in front. It's not pretty, but it worked out beautifully. I let it sit all day at school and I got home with about hr n half of sunlight to work with. I didn't rush, well tried not to. Putting them back together was not difficult, but I did lose 1 of 4 nuts on the UIM (passenger side).
I rerouted the coolant line by cutting about 3" off the 2' hose and straight from the engine to the back of BAC (removed the original hose going coming from the TB). So I had no need for the extra hose nor all the fitting that I bought to make a 90deg. I'll return them next time I go to pepboys. I thought I got all the vaccum lines and started the car up, but it kept dying on me. The sun was already down, so I stop for the day.

Tuesday (today)
We learned to disassemble and reassemble starters today at school. lol I get home with hr n half to work with and it's freeszing outside. I remove the IC and adjust the TPS. I will have to replace this( i think) since at WOT, the ohm reading was 6.8k ohm and i think there was a short "OL" during the transition from rest. But I've checked the price.... $170+ at mazdatrix...ouch... I reinstall the IC and make sure the clamps are tight. And I find the problem. The fairly big vaccum hose into the IC piping before IC was off and the vaccum line from the BOV to UIM was off also. I light up another cigarette and fire her up. WOOHOO... after some white smoke, she is steadily idling it 750rpm. Didn't need an idle adj. I take her for a quick test drive. OMG, throttle response is unbelievable now. I can't wait for the drive to school tom morning. And I plan to take my UIM off and at least clean it tom at school now that I know what bolts n nuts to loosen. Once again, mad props to Ted at fc3s-pro.com.

ever dyno'd your car or run it at the track? Was there an hp gain from the mod or just throttle response.

It still needs alot of work. I know for a fact that my precat is shot n probably my main cat also. I actually heard them go I think a while ago. So I plan to get either a dp n cat replacement combo or the full racing beat exhaust, i think at like $750 as soon as I can afford it. There was defintely a hp gain plus the throttle response. But it still doesn't scare me like when I first got the car (the turbo upgrade was already installed). I truly believe that was a 12 sec car. Because when I first got the car, I changed the battery(was sitting for a yr b/c emissions.), spark plugs, oil change. And with the profec set at 1 bar, the thing boosted to 1.5bar and I was "gone in 60seconds". lol
Anways, I been through two motor changes in the past 2 yrs and the car never ran like she did.

I did take it to the track last sep. It was my first time at the track and the car needed a tune up. I ran a 14.7 but never redlined it, b/c i didnt wanna blow anything up. I won't dyno it or run it again until I address all the issues first and have it run right. That's why i'm going to lincoln tech now, so I can work on my own car and make a living doing what i like. Anyways, I been a member of this forum for over a year and this time was the first time I really used it and glad I did.

peace,

eddie
