post header install question

So i just installed my racing beat streetable (collected) header and pre-silencer on my 1990 GXL. I have a few questions that i'm not too sure about. I talked to the guys at racing beat and they told me that the split air tube DOESN'T need to be blocked off for the car to run, i can verify this as i've been driving with it un blocked off. however i was told i could block it off. i would like to know the best way to do this as there isn't a place to bolt up a block off plate like on a tII, and also what happens to the air that would otherwise blow out of the split air pipe after it's been blocked off? would this not affect the performance of my car? And secondly if i block off the split air pipe would it get rid of most of the smell in my car? My dad constantly complains now that i smell like a lawnmower everytime i get out of my car. Any suggestions would be great, my friend and i are going to jack the car back up and make sure all the nuts are tight on the entire exhaust system. Thanks in advance

Do you have new exhaust gaskets? that is probably why you smell like a lawnmower besides the fact you own an rx7.

Which is kinda odd, I had my exhaust stole and I've driven about 500 miles like that and I never smell anything o.o. When I had the stock exhaust I had a leak in the Y pipe, that made the car smell very very bad inside...

yea, i put all new gaskets on so idk. I'm going to check for leaks i guess. it doesn't make sense. Shouldn't all the exhaust fumes go out the tailpipe and not into the cabin?

If theres a leak somewhere it can, is all the exhaust hung properly and tightened down good?

All of the connecting points of the exhaust should have metal exhaust gaskets, the paper ones burn up.

you running a main cat? doesnt sound like it

I bought all my gaskets new from racing beat. I think they're the oem ones but i could be wrong. No i'm not running a cat, just the pre-silencer. I'm going to let the exhaust cool down and then go check all the bolts, last night they were pretty darn tight but who knows maybe we could get them tighter. Is there such a think as too tight on exhaust connections? i'll have to look into my shifter boot too. thanks guys for the help
