Question Possible bad bearings in Turbo?

This is strange and I wonder if any of you guys have experienced this.

Right when I start my car(88 TII, TO4B Hybrid, 3inch t-back exhaust, ect, ect) I get this annoying fast paced rattle that is really intensified when I put my ear near the Hot side of my turbo or near the down pipe. once i rev the car a little the noise dissapears but comes back at idle. I remember reading about wrapping your down pipe to deal with heat and noise and I do have it thermo wrapped.

As the car warms up the noise starts to die down quite a bit.

My turbo isn't ball bearing(float type I believe)and I don't know how much milage is on it. I purchased it from a rotary performance shop in Europe and it was made by Panspeed. The turbo is not acting up in the performance by any means. It pulls hard to redline and drops very little boost.

Just curious if the bearings in a turbo charger start to make this sound once they are getting close to retirement.

I thought maybe my engine bearings were going out but you only hear it near the turbo and DP and this engine only has about 3k on it.

I doubt you'd hear a sleeve bearing rattle. What you might hear if the bearings are worn out, is the compressor wheel touching the case because there is too much slack due to a worn bearing.

Just take the thirty minutes to pull the inlet duct off the turbo and get hold of the compressor wheel and see how much slack there is in the shaft. If you can push up/down and make the wheel touch the surrounding metal, then it's too worn.

thanks for the response but I just took my car out for a long drive and when I pulled into my driveway and stood outside my car, I couldn't hear the rattle at all. Not even with the hood popped. It just goes away as the engine warms up.

If the shaft had to much play the engine temp wouldn't make a difference right? Very strange, almost the sound the rotary makes when you advance the timing with the CAS too much(or maybe retard it too much. Sorry, I am a little tired right now.). Wonder if my F-con is adjusting my timing at idle. I Am running super rich, like 10.3 on my wideband. Plus I am running 720'c all around for injectors on a computer made for 550cc. That F-con is probably hindering me so much. I plan to get my megasquirt installed and tuned once I get some dyno time.

If the turbo bearings are bad, it would either hum or screech.
Those bearings will not rattle.
It sounds like something is loose.
Heat shield?

It could be the Diffusers loose in the exaust ports. Only a removal of the turbo will tell.

No heat shield Ted.

I don't know what it is but I am taking my turbo off this next weekend(Seven Stock 9 this weekend, WAHOO!!!) to port the wastegate(I guess Panspeed didn't do it) so i am going to inspect everything and see what I can find.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. Only in N/A's or n/a housings being used for turbo's but diffusers grinded out.
