It's all relative and mainly based on how much boost you are planning. At stock boost levels then all you really need is a fuel pump. But when you upgrad the turbo and/or increase boost you start to need upgrades. For only minor changes larger secondary injectors (as well as the fuel pump) are necessary and some way to control them (S-AFC).

Anything more radical and you are looking at a standalone. While it CAN be made to work on the stock ECU with piggy backs you will never have the control or reliability you can have with a standalone system.

just to clarify (please forgive my ignorance) I'm just wantign to have my engine ported now because i need to rebuild, but dont have the money to do any more upgrades at the moment...so keeping everything else stock, and porting the housings should work?

Don't port if you can't do any fuel upgrades.
