porting

OK I have some questions about porting my RX. Ok first of all Im wondering how hard is it to port the intake and exhaust on a rx7? Next can you use a street port on the intake and a bigger port on the exhaust? What tools will be needed to port it? And finally what company makes a good template for it?
thanx

racing beat has templates for several levels of porting, you would need a die grinder preferbly air powered. and several different cutting and shapeing bits.

porting is not a job that is well suited for a novice tuner. although you have to start somewhere. my best suggestion to you would be to get some old side housings and rotor housings that have exceeded their service life and start porting them befor you destroy your own engine.

also is your car a turbo? porting a turbo engine is a little more forgiving than on N/A engines. simply because boost will make up for small mestakes. as far as port size differences go between intake and exhaust, im really no at that level of knowledge to tell you one way or another. ill tell you this though, i havent seen to many port jobs on exhaust ports that look humongus compared to stock. the stock exhaust ports should do the trick on a mild street port intake.

do a little searching and check out other ways to gain power befor you go scattering your engine block across your garage floor. there are ways of getting gains of 20-40 horses without dissasembly of your engine. intake parts, exhaust headers, piggy back fuel controlers and up grade injectors are all healty ways of extracting horse power for the novice tuner.

not saying that youre clueless but, stick to the easy stuff first. learn more about your car and do lots of reasearch. there are many archived threads on various aspects of drawing the power out of a rotary engine!!

good luck and i wish you well on the porting trials.

hope you can give us some good writeups on your journey.

ok the reason i was considering porting the engine was because it blew a water seal and i have to pull it apart anyways.

And what could I do to my intake to get more power? And what is the piggy back fuel controlers?

if you want to port your own engine, do like he said and practice. a buddy of mine is really into tuning of all kinds and he wants to port my engine. he got the bits and templates and started practicing on scrap metal. hes been doing it since january and we are going to do it this summer, once i dont have to draive back and forth to school. its taken him a while to get where hes at but im almost positive he can to it without a hitch.
