Port air split air?
When you are at idle, the airpump air goes to the exaust ports. As you drive off, and anytime that your foot is on the accelerator, the air is sent to your split air pipe. If your driving along and let off the pedal, the air is sent again to the exaust ports (port air).
If your over 3500 rpm, most of the air pumps air is dumped overboard. I'm not real sure how much pressure is left in the acv to go to the split air pipe at that time.
There is also the split air solenoid that comes into play when the car is in fifth gear. It sends additional air to the split air pipe along with the air that is going there already.

Well the best way to get rid of shavings is to undo the three bolts that hold it on and take it off to blow shop air thru it.
I have no real clue why fresh air is sent to the exaust ports at idle and when you let off the throttle. I assume its adding air to a rich mixture to help it burn off.
