Popping noise on decelleration??

I havent driven my car in a long time now, ive been going through school and i have been stuck here in texas at my duty station... im taking leave oct 20th to go get my baby and put a few things on her.

But i remember when i drove her last, when i let off the gas and slowed down, a popping noise would sound in the exaust.. from what i understand, its afterburn, and it could be related to improper ignition timing, incorrect idle speed, or a malufuntioning afterburn valve or something like that... My car does have a problem with idling, it idles really really low... i mean like 300-500 rpms, and stalls if i dont keep pressure on the pedals sometimes..

Im about to drop in a new reman street port engine, and some headers, presilencer, act clutch, full exaust, intake, springs, rims, and some other misc. stuff.
Im in a time frame of about a week to drop this engine in and get it running, so i can start to break her in and drive back to my duty station.

im pretty sure its the idle what is making it pop like it is, but it seems like its coming from the catalytic converters, and the cat's are gutted.

Any ideas??

Also, what the heck is a thermo oil pellot? ive seen these on ebay and it does something with the oil distribution.. im wonder whether i should get one, but im sort of confused on what it is.

Thanks.
Justin

Is your car running rich? It could be backfiring. Common trait of our cars.

Check for any vacuum leaks 1st of all. When is the last time the car has had a full tune-up? New plugs, wires, filters changed, etc... Afterburn can also be caused by a faulty or malfunctioning ACV (Air control valve.

Yup thats good ol' fire. With header back exhaust, I wouldnt worry about it too much, because its pretty normal with such an open exhaust. The reason it happens is because rotaries burn crazy hot so they can ignite exhaust gases sometimes, and the fact that our cars burn rich stock doesnt help either.
