Popping noise

I've searched and still am right now. Car makes like popping noises while its in cold startup mode(idling at 1.5k) my clutch is gone so i just start it up every couple of days to keep it happy. It sounds as though it's coming from down near the turbo( i dont think it is the turbo). Havent noticed any problems in driving though so not too sure what it could be. I think it's unrelated but ive been spewing abit of smoke on startup, greyish blue and consuming alot of oil(not the usual amount for a rotary). I think the oil control ring is on its way out?

But anyways back to the popping, i have an atmospheric BoV(done up really tight so it barely opens at all) and i was reading on audi forums that an atmospheric BoV in a closed loop intake system can lead to misfiring ect ect. Is our system closd loop and could it have anything to do with the popping. Maybe exhaust leak? But i figured not that cause i would realise it easier.

Any help is appreciated.

P.S becoming an apprentice mechanic at Audi thats why i'm on their forum.

exhaust popping is common on our cars when you remove the airpump and ACV, as there is no air being pumped into the exhaust ports or cat.

Starting up a car every couple days for a short time is bad for it. Go to www.aaroncake.net for proper storage procedures. Or if it's only for a month or two you don't need to do anything. Just maybe do basic maintenance items a little earlier.

Ya, the bluish-grey smoke and oil consumption signifies a bad oil control ring. Also check for fuel in the oil. If fuel is thinning out your oil you need to change it more often. Assuming your engine isn't completely toast already.

I don't think an atmospheric BoV will cause any problems. If the popping is coming from the tail pipe, it means there is too much fuel in the exhaust and not enough air. Arghx gave one possible cause. If this is your situation then it won't hurt anything except the catalytic converter, assuming you have one. With all that oil and fuel you don't stand much of a chance on any emissions test anyway. Do you have those in Australia?

Thanks for the help guys, i was kind looking down that line. Not storing the car, just its inactive for now(clutch is gone). Just waiting till next week before i take it in. Only just serviced the car a few weeks ago. How can i tell if there is fuel in the oil? Somehow i dont think there is. The engine is still running strong guessing compression may be quite low(200k kms on the clock and it has warm start issues VERY rarely). I still have the airpump on and ACV? Is that cold start or something like that, its all still stock so i would most definatly have that too.

Luckily here in Aus we don't have to pass emissions to be on the road, but police can send you to EPA to have it tested. Good thing is though i'm a fairly controlled driver, never anything too stupid(WOT from red lights to speed limit is about as far as i take it on public roads) so cops tend to leave me alone. If i do get pulled over, the bullshit rotary talk usually saves me(Made one cop think my top mount was a second radiator because rotaries run hot, and avoided EPA due to loud exhaust note by saying rotors are always loud).

One thing i forgot to mention in the first post was that when it pops the engine kind shakes, which made me think, detonation? =s I run 98 octane so im not sure if thats possible while running stock.
