Poll: how old are ya'll/ Q: air line going to Catalyst?
Hey ya'all!
I've got a question for ya. I bought a gutted catalyst off ebay for 5$ plus shipping. I noticed there was a line goign to the catalyst, which i'm assuming is fromthe air pump.
Why then, does the air pump line seem to go to the LIM? Does the air pump need filtered air as well if we use an open type Ebay filter?
Thanks a bunch,
Grant

THat line goes to the ACV which is attached to the Lower intake manifold. The ACV directs air from the airpump around to various places, one of them being to the cat.
your profile says you have an 88 (s4) if you eyeball the line that comes from the cat, there should be a little junction in the pipe where a vac line splits off and goes to your six port system... here lies the rub!!!
If you do have an 88, if you put that gutted cat on and have aftermarket mufflers, that little line going to the six ports may not get enough pressure to operate the six port system...
Oh boy... You'd better spend some time doin searches on six ports, what they are, how they work, and what ya gotta do to get 'em to work after ya remove the cats... there have been a TON of write ups on it.

hey, I have a ported intake manifold ready to go on. Should i jsut say "to hell with the actuators" and just put the intake manifold on w/o them when i install the gutted cat?
I don't have a lot of mods so maybe it would be to much of a low RPM sacrafice?
Open element intake
Gutted cat
amatuerish ported TB/TB mod
mild ported intake manifold
Thanks,
Grant

The aux ports are driven by exhaust back pressure on the 84-88 13B engines.
And yes, the air pump must have a filter on its input. More to help prevent the air pump from gumming up and failing more than anything else.

so Mark, or anybody else that knows, if i hooked up that line and its split air pipe to the gutted cat, do u suppose running the air pump w/o catalyzing material would be harmful?
Maybe i should just pull them out.....or wire them open?
Would i be able to retro-fit the s5 electric actuators onto the s4 system?
thanks a bunch,
Grant

It would be perfectly fine to run the air line with a gutted cat. The aux ports still would need the back pressure to work.
I never ever recommend wiring the aux ports open. You loose too much low end for only a return to stock power at the high end.
If you had a full exhaust and had a gutted cat, then you would want to do a set up to activate the aux ports through electronics and an air pump.
But the question begs itself, why did you gut your cat and are driving the car in CA? I keep hearing of these kids that do this and when smog comes up, they whine that they have to buy a cat. Kinda dumb if you ask me.

Thanks a bunch for the info...
I kept my cat...bought the gutted one on ebay. Just a pain in the *** every two years. And as a kid, i must have flamage...to show off at the local in n out car meetings.
I'm getting so many different suggestions..some say yank the aux out, some say wire open, some say pinneaple ports, and others (mark) say keep it stock.
how utterly confusing

Mazda has the 5th/6th ports on the high power version of the Renisis in the RX-8
They don't have some silly insert at the end of the port that can come loose and fall into the engine (like the pineapple sleeves have been known to do).
Now do you think they would have put the aux ports in, and made them work (and didn't put in some silly inserts) if they didn't make more power.
The people that say "wire them open" or "remove them" are people that usually don't have the ports working, and noticed a return to stock levels of HP at upper RPMs when the wired them open or removed them.
It’s sort of like having a twin cam piston engine, that you don't use the 2nd set of valves. Then decide to open the intake runners, so they always are on, even at low RPMs… of course it makes your car slower when starting, but as fast as stock at freeway speeds and up.
Same idea as wiring open the aux ports or removing the sleaves. Make it work right for the best power.

All right, i respect your opinion mark. I'm going to try my best to get these to work right.
O wait...actually...im getting a used RB header, don't think it has the hook up for the S4 actuators. Maybe I should go electrical and hook them up that way.
I'll figure something out I'm sure.
What do you think of this:
I read about some people blasting grindings out of the rotor housing to test how well they Street Ported their engines. People claimed the stock sleeves were crap b/c hardly any fillings came out of the AUX port when air was blown into it....they figured it jsut flowed really crappy.
