pod filter? you mean engine air filter? you can replace the air filter with something higher flowing without any damage. i dont know any filter that will hurt the car if you change/upgrade it. a bad quality air filter will let in too much dirt and other crap and that will kill the apex seals in a hurry, but most brand name filters do a good job. apexi, hks, etc. also the afm does a good job of letting you know if your getting too much air in and the car wont idle. it is a saftey feature for the engine. so if you replace and the car wont idle find a better one. i recomend K&N filters, but i duno if they sell those down under.

Changing the intake itself is not going to cause an engine to blow, but if you already have a pretty open exhaust and then install and intake, that could be enough to overboost the car and thus blow the engine. But the filter alone won't do it.

K&N filters are available almost anywhere, so you should be able to find them in Oz. Otherwise, there are many other filter brands. They're all pretty much the same, except for the HKS, which seriously sucks.
