please help
i have the option of buying an rx-7 that is an 88'. it has a new clutch, and has not been drivin since 1996. the compression tests at 75psi. should i get the car or not?. no rust and good body/ interior. please give some advice. i do not know if it is a turbo or not. i have not called the guy yet. and he only wants $1,000 and it is an old man.

75 PSI (if done correctly) is under the recommended level for rebuilding.
Compression should be checked on each rotor face, at 500 RPM with the engine warm and the throttle held at WOT.
I consider anything under 85 PSI a candidate for rebuilding and will often rebuild at 90 psi on turbo motors.
Normal good compression is above 115 psi on each face and ideal compression would be 125+ psi on each face.

at 500 rpm? I thought the starter spun the engine at 250. Anyway, I wouldn't mess with it. That engine is a ticking time bomb. It could last a while, or it could last a few weeks. Also, the soft seals are likely in bad condition as well.
I wouldn't go so far as to say don't buy it. Granted, you will have to spend $2-4K on a rebuild of the engine that's in it, or a rebuilt engine that you get elsewhere. After that you will have an engine that will last well over 100 thousand miles. If the body, interior, transmission, suspension and rear end are in good shape, you might want to consider getting the car. If the compression really is only 75, you can bargain that it has to be rebuilt and maybe you can get it for less than the thousand he's asking.

If your up for getting it rebuilt, then I say go for it and try to bring the price down, but don't get it expecting the engine to last. It might, but the odds are against it.

be wary of getting a sho taurus if you think rx7's are promblematic sho's are worst.cam problems etc just google it or go to one of their forums.i almost picked up a mint v8 one from cousins used car lot then i did my homework .scary its still a the lot and this thing is mint
