please help

hello all I have an 88gxl and last night on my way home from my freinds house I noticed the stereo light was a bit dim. I continued on home and soon the radio shut off and all the lighting went really dim. The idle was a bit rough and acceleration was very hesitant and poor. It's obvious it's an electrical problem, but any suggestions on what to check first would be much appreciated. Btw- my voltage gauge was reading really low. Thanks in advance ------Ren

Sounds as if the alternator wasn't supplying voltage to keep the battery charged. I would check belt to make sure it is tight with only a minimal amount of deflection. Check battery cables for corrosion and clean connection. If above ok, pull alternator and have it checked. Most large auto supply stores will do it. I'm sure you'll need to have the battery charged, and then have that checked as well.
