pilot bearing w/1k miles- still replace or no?
i'm putting together a motor and using the eshaft from an engine that had it's pilot bearing replaced by a clutch shop and was used for about 1,000 miles. the engine has been pulled twice since then and reinstalled once (don't know if this can damage it or not).
i know that it's generally advisable to replace these when the engine's out, but does that still hold true when it's practically new?

For the cost of the bearing and seal, I would do a replacement. Don't know how long the bearing was left opened to the environment so dust could collect on surface.
Be safe, replace them.

+1, for the cost, it would be much smarter to replace than to have to pull it later to replace it when you find for some reason its gone bad prematurely. So yes on the replace.
Screw it jus leave it. Do you know how much of a pain it is to get those things out of there. 1000 is nothing and it should be fine. Think of all the cars that probly had em in for 150k+ miles But thats jus me so who cares :/ lol
i dont kno wman i would replace it, i just had to chisel mine out ysterday and it only had 350 miles on it, it grenaded for some reason, i most likely damaged it putting it in, but thats alot of work to go through for a seven dollar part
cars with 150k on the pilot bearing likely never had their transmissions pulled. pulling and installing the trans can damage the pilot bearing. it's also out in the elements for a while
you're going to be kicking yourself in the nuts if you have to pull the trans again because you were too cheap to put in a new bearing and messed up the old one pulling the trans out at a weird angle.

alright, i think i'll go with a new one...i've spend way too much money to replace small parts like this just for reliability's sake to not do this one as well.
the only pullers i've seen are from atkins or mazda trix, and turn a seven dollar part into a 157 replacement job...are there any generic pullers that will work as well, maybe that you can rent?

I'm certain there probably is a puller you can rent at a parts store like AutoZone, if any in your area. I have a 2 jaw puller I use, but unless it's jaws are kept extremely tight against the e-shaft, chances are you're going to leave the outer shell in there. It's happened to me, but by exerting more pressure on the jaws, you can remove the outer shell.

If you go to the 5th thru 7th post on the attached thread, you'll find a cheap, easy alternate method of pulling the bearing out.

You can also rent the proper tool at Autozone.
