pilot bearing seal

I'm going a clutch job. I have read about this pilot bearing seal. I believe that is what i pulled out tonight w/ a screw driver. The pilot bearing i have to go rent the tool for tomorrow. My clutch kit came with everything except the pilot bearing seal. So the main question, do you need the pilot bearing seal, whats its prupose really? And if i need one whats the part
number at mazda so i can get one.

Thanks,Joe

using a screw driver is bad...Unless you are very careful or you don't want the seal any more. Shouldn't the clutch kit come with one?

Hmm... This is odd. Maybe I am about to learn something, cause when I put my pilot bearing in, I just took the old one out, and slapped a new one in.

The seal is to prevent grease from the pilot bearing from backing out of the hole and possibly damaging your clutch.
It is highly recommended to get it, since it's only a couple dollars.

Some clutch kits don't have them for some strange reason.

My ACT didn't have one.

I just had one lay'n around.

The seal can be taken out with a screw driver carefully and slowly. The bearing itself would be about impossible though.

worst case scenario it will eat up your output shaft and score your eccentric shaft

Don't leave the clutch in at stop lights. this will prolong the life.

I wouldn't worry too much about it though.

Just do alot of 5k drops so you can replace your clutch fast.

Now as for the seal you need to go to Mazda and get the part (part #1881-11-404)...its like $3 ...The bearing goes in first followed by the oil seal...Now when you go to put the seal in the rubber side goes toward outside and the metal side goes toward the needle bearing(I think 90% right)!

Man, its entirely possible that I put it in, and just dont remember it. All I remember is replacing the pilot bearing.
