A pillar repair....

So, I cleaned my car and put leather cleaner on the steering wheel. So combine that with my manual steering and it being a lil slippery my hand slipped off and nailed my pillar gauges.

What broke...my forking a pillar about four inchs from above the point where it comes out of the dash.

I am going to repair it and the best I could come up with is this. Crazy glue it back together. Then take a fiberglass repair kit and lay up a few layers of fiberglass on the backside of the break.

http://www.permatex.com/products/aut..._Patch_Kit.htm

It says its recommended for wood, metal, and fiberglass of course.

The epoxy it came with was 45 minute stuff with a seperate hardner. I don't see why it would not adhere to plastic.

Any thoughts ?

James

The fiberglass will work great for this. Just remember to clean and then rough up the surface in the back, to give it something to adhere to. Also, be careful when you're putting it back on, as your fiberglassed part will likely be stronger than the rest of it.

ABS cement from your local hardware store will work night and day better than superglue and fiberglass or epoxy.

after all... it is ABS plastic.

I wanted to use the fiberglass to give it some physical support....

But I do have this stuff called JET for models...like i have thick and thin stuff.

Why do these a-pillars break so easily? Last fall mine was in one piece, then yesterday I was giving my car a spring cleaning and the passenger side a pillar plastic is snapped in half!

Because Mazda didn't make the best ABS plastics by any means... Couple that with the fact that it probably sat in the sun for at least 10 years of it's life, and you have a recipe for disaster!
