Ahh, gotta love glorious failure. 150K miles of city driving causes the strangest things
Started getting a "clicking sound" when releasing the clutch petal, turns out the clutch switch button was slipping into a hole where the switch's rubber bump stop use to be on the pedal neck. You can see below the remains of that bump stop.
Here's a before and after. If this happens to you, using a panel fastener (click me) temporarily would work until a permanent replacement arrives.
Part number G030-43-029

key search terms: clicking pedal, clutch rubber stop, clutch switch, pedal switch, click pedal, clutch hole

I realize I'm bringing this back from the dead, but this post with its pictures should almost be a sticky...
My clutch pedal has been making the "boinging" or "clicking" noise since I bought the car a few weeks ago and it sure was annoying. I even ordered a new clutch switch hoping it would fix the problem. I didn't realize until today that there was a separate part number for the "clutch switch bump stop?"
After doing a search, I see that many owners have this problem or have had it before and fixed it by JB Welding some scrap of something over the hole in the clutch pedal. Why bother when the actual Mazda part is only a few bucks?
Thanks for this very helpful post!

Without the bump stop in place, the white plunger goes right through the clutch pedal so the cruise control thinks you have the pedal depressed. I suspect this is why my cruise control isn't working right now (not that I really plan to use it).
As vaughnc noted in his other thread on the subject, Mazda has replaced the original more brittle black stopper with a more pliable blue one with the same part number. I just ordered one and it was under $3.

Here's that replacement one:

Looks like it's the case here. The original bump stop for the clutch switch was plastic bonded to rubber, and tended to splinter/shatter (see further below) after 150K miles. These replacements are all rubber I believe, and THICKER.
