Should have really used tooling gel, surprised the supplier didnt advise you of that.

 

i did have gel.......just screwed up with the wax......it was a lil late and i thought i had enough.....trust me i learned my lesson

 

tooling gel, its a different type of gel coat.

Did you make that mold thick being as you didnt add any stiffners to it?

 

ah no...they told me nothign about hat kind of coat...whats the difference......maybe i should know before i start making copies.........the mold is thick enough yet plenty of flex that way i can pop out the copies...or as far as i was told to do....couple of layers of mat...another layer of a different fiber used to hide the strands and of course the gel coat....but tell me about this tooling coat

its too late for the tooling gel.
You should really put some stiffeners in that mold, once you start laying up in it the heat will distort it, especially since you want to pull quite a few off it. Molds by no means are supposed to be flexible, if it flexs the part will distort.

Make sure your lay up schedule isnt too quick, lots of wax first, gel coat, let the gel set up, then 1 layer of 3/4 oz mat, let that set up, then lay up on top of that no more then 2 layers at a time with 1 1/2 oz mat, generating too much heat in the mold will also distort the part and make the glass brittle, you did get a steel roller to push the air out right? Of course make sure you are using laminating gelcoat with no wax in it.

Are you spraying the gel on or rolling it on?
I have seen parts come out of the mold that show
the roller marks after they have sat out in the sun for
a season, you can actually see the roller marks show up right thru the primer and paint. Gel coat guns arent that expensive, messy yes, but not expensive.

Also make sure you rip the ends of the fiberglass matting if you cant get a whole piece on the hood, if you just lay it in there with the seams intact they will also end up showing thru once it sits in the heat. It will show up as lines in the hood.

 

hey Rob thanx for the info its redally appreciated......as far as the mold goes i plan on pulling maybe 3 out of it, and im seriously considering maybe two max, and then just making a mold of my other product depending on how it turns out off of the mold considering a fiberglass hood will be a hell of a lot easier to work with rather than a 70lb steel and bondo hood. As far as the layers go i never put more than one layer at a time, knowing i could have put two, i just wanted to test and play first. Ye splenty of freaking wax next time, hell ima use the whole can considering the hell i went thru yanking this mold off of the plug, another reason i feel like making another mold off of the product..........and as for the gel coat aplication im definitely thinking spray on for the next go round....and as for a roller i have been using a squeege........anymore advice.....and shipping to cali shouldnt b that expensive
