Pics of my horizontal mount conversion

It is not done, but I was able to drive it into work for pics.

I'm just going to post these and go to bed probably, but to answer some questions everyone asks-

The stock TII/NA hood fits w/ no problem, I just haven't put it on my NA alum hood since I am removing the latch catch so I don't have to cut my cooling panel for it.

I did not cut or drill the unibody at all, just modded replaceable parts and used stock mounting points.

It is not done, I will make the IC duct opening in the bumper pretty.

The stock bumper opening feeds the oil cooler and radiator ONLY. The IC is fed by the duct I cut ONLY. There is a stainless steel shroud between the two. Both ducts are sealed off/foamed in.

The car was very dirty so I only took pics of the engine

Rob Golden of Pineapple racing rebuilt the engine "block", Bryan at BNR did the turbo, I had a local shop do the TIG welding once I fitted the parts, I fabbed the rest w/ a file, vise, hacksaw, drill, sander, and die grinder and parts from the wreckers/junkyard- well, besides the off-shelf parts I bought of course :-)

Maybe you can hash out the other details from my sig.

....this shows where the radiator is. The fan is directly on the back of the radiator.

I concentrated on simplification and reliability mods. Everything is overkill for the 300RWHP goal.

That's interesting, but how do you plan on ducting it? Remember than any air you allow to pass around the radiator and into the engine bay will decrease the pressure differential between the front and rear of the radiator, thus decreasing its airflow and efficiency.

Otherwise, kudos for a unique idea.

I wrapped all the wires in aluminized fiberglass tape and re routed the harness along the top of the firewall. A partition protects the sensors/relays from the turbo heat.

It is not a unique idea- it is the set-up the fastest track FCs and FDs use in Japanese racing.

Allow myself to quote my.... self.

See, it does all fit under the hood (I actually tested clearances w/ the playdough method- 3/4" at closest spot.)

Here is the IC duct. It will become pretty, I promise.

I tried to light up the stainless shroud w/ a flashlight on that foam for the pic, but you just can't see in there well. The shroud curves from where the stock plastic cooling panels would be up to the top of the radiator.

damn dude that looks good.
what would i have to do to get an FD upper and lower intake setup? and what do you do about the TPS and the sensors that are supposed to be of FC genre (instead of the new FD manifold stuff you have on there)
what all would i have to do to put a lower and upper FD intake on my turbo2?

I think there is going to be a problem with airflow. I saw actives FC <circuit car> and fell in love with the idea of a horizontal mount, BUT I still think a FMIC is the most effecient. It seems more practical to devide the FMIC like you did with aluminum panels. Maybe you can find a way to duct more air into the IC. The hole feeding the IC on your car is right in the middle of the nose.<air breaking across the car is going to go down or up, I think very little is going to flow directly in the middle. Maybe a thin fan will work. Sorry I dont mean to be negitive. You have the cleanest horizintal mount IC ive seen in the US.

I was out looking at my car a couple months ago and decided this would be an awesome setup.

From your pics it looks exactly like i was thinking in my head...

That looks very impressive, I have thought about doing something like this. I must say the install that you have done is hella clean.

Ha! When I read the title for this thread I thought somebody was converting their FC to fwd with a transaxle a la Ro80. Glad to see it's just an intercooler relocation, and not some ingenious scheme to rule the world.

Oh yeah. Really nice, clean car. Looks potent.

Looks really nice! You could even tap into the airflow to the IC for a nice little cold air box.

beautifully done!!! remember, most of the road racing FD's in japan use that setup as well...there are advantages and disadvantages of course, but the best part is that it's unique and very nicely designed!! Sure, FMIC is the norm for most upgrades but who wants to be normal? Front mounts also necessitate long IC piping which means lag and pressure drop. The piping on this setup is direct and short, w/ proper ducting (u seem to have it all figured out) this should be a great way to go for TII owners. Package together a bolt on kit that can be made to order...make some $$$$ As if the motor isn't a clue that this is a seriously cool car I also saw some TE37's...post pics of the car!!!! hehe

You also don't risk the chance of a rock or other road debris hitting the IC!

Once again, very nice.
I've seen this car, and aside from a little workshop dust it's quite a bit nicer in person than you might expect from the photos. Makes my GXL look like an old rag.
Congrats and good luck on the turbo!
