Thumbs up Pics of my engine rebuild this weekend. And the crazy story.

Everyone should do at least one of these in their life! The sound of the apex seal springs popping into place is just unbeatable. I did this all over the course of a full day Tuesday. I know it took a while but I took my time to get it right & get all the measurements correct. I also had one major set back; THANK YOU K2RD! Damn I got one of my rotors all setup.. went on to the rear rotor and the damn thing was out of whack, I could not get the corner seals to go in correctly. It was slightly tweaked.. but not enough to notice by eye. Mind you at this point I am 5 Hrs into the project… I had taken the day off work to do this and I was minus a rotor! I called all over California to get a rotor on the spot .. most places thought I was talking about brake rotors when I called…. I had to explain no no .. a RX7! Then they promptly told me nope.. don’t have those.

So I called down to K2RD … and YES! They answered there phone … had a rotor and whala I dove up there and picked it up, and got back to work .. here are the pics.

Was this your first rebuild? I want to do rebuild my engine but I dont want to spend $850 on a kit and then screw something up. It looks easy and Im sure I can do it but for some reason Im a little "scared" (not sure if thats the word Im looking for).

well, I added a high flow oil pump and a new oil pump chain .. and it was such a tight fit to get the new chain lined up and both keys ... one on the Eshaft, and one on the oil pump.. they both have to line up on the right chain links so they can slide down the keys... that was a royal pain in the ***, and the oil pump key kept dropping down.. I fianlly glued the damn oil pump key in place and then it went on a little easier. Otherwise it was very smooth going.

Ahh, and I broke a couple of corner seals .. cause the new side seals I put on were to tight .. I ended up haveing to grind them to trim them to the correct specs. But I had ordered spare corner seals in preperation. So it was no biggy. My first rotoary rebuild and it was semi hitch free now lets hope it runs ..

Haha

Well I hope to have the engine in the car this weekend. I do recomend having another person help you .. my old man came up from the Bay Area to help out .. there is a few places a extra pair of hands really helps out.. P.S. that his ugly *** tennis shoes in the background I'm taking the pics...

BTW the rebuild kit I got .. with the upgrades was $1263.00 so the damn thing BETTER run!

Thx for the compliments fellas. I did everything to the T as far as I could tell, I will keep you all posted on the outcome for sure. I might get it started as early as this Sunday .. I plan to put all weekend into it.

BTW: I used the Atkins rotary video as a guideline ... it was a sure time saver I recomend it highly if you decide to do this yourself for the first time.

Hah, I screwed up the oil seals on my first rebuild, had to pull it and do it over again, and still in the process of doing such! Good luck!

not sure really, one of them looked like it got squished and had a flat-spot on it, must have been careless putting it in!

What did the engine do? just burn oil like a siv? did you use new rotor oil seals or reuse your old ones?

I used new ones, however when I was putting them in, or something one of them must've been pinched and it got a flat spot on it, and it burnt oil and smoked like a crashed oil tanker on fire.
