pics - fan console light on 87 TII - weird

I don't remember seeing this before. Was this a factory installed option?

This came on an early 87 TII. You know the "naked TII-s" with no rear spoiler, no side skirts, cloth interior, etc..

Before you crank the car, this 2nd (non essential) electric fan starts spinning as well. The fan console light blips when you crank the car as well.

a 2nd radiator fan. Beside the belt driven one, this eletric fan sits on the front side of the radiator.

it was standard on the 87 T2. If you check the 87 owners manuals it talks about it in there.

The fan warning light is normally in the warning light cluster, but ABS-equipped vehicles had the ABS warning light in its place and the fan light was moved to the temp gauge. JDM FC's and all S5's don't have any fan warning light.
I understand the auxillary fan was standard on some models and optional on others. It runs whenever the A/C is turned on or if the coolant temp exceeds ~200degF, which also triggers the warning light.
My auxillary fan runs at start-up too. It starts about 5 seconds after you start the engine and runs for ~20 seconds.

No aux fan on my 1991 TII, but it stays at 185 degrees - even when bouncing off the rev limiter while racing.

I think the heat problems when racing hard was an S4 thing on the OEM setup. Not sure if the radiator on the S5 is more effiecient or not.

Why? That should be completely unnecessary.

I have the light.
I'm pretty sure it adds about 10HP.

Just get a Fiero fan and be done with it, I doubt that second fan flows very much air, I installed mine I took it drag racing the temp never went above 1/4 of the way, plus the fan shroud it comes with is the same heighth and only like 1" less weighth than the rad, installed for 2 weeks now and now ill effects on my 88TII running 9psi with full exhaust, $30 feiro fan at pick-n-pull and anther 30 for the adj thermostat and the relay........best mod I've done so far....well other than the full exhaust

i had the problem is that fan being stuck on as soon as i turn the key, and it wouldnt shut off, even if i use the in-car switch that was installed.

so eventually i couldnt take it so i disconnected the fan at the fan. but then after that the little light on the dash would come on all the time. but its not over heating. ps, before i unplugged the fan the light wasent on ever.

i dont understand. maybe the in-car switch has a bad rely?

Mines wierd. I have heard it come on a few times when I turned the ignition to on. But my rad isnt even on the car right now, and under it there was no fan to speak of. Just the ac condenser and under that there is the oil cooler. I dont see a fan anywhere heh.

Check the temp switch on the top of the thermosat housing. If that's disconnected the fan will run continuously. Or it could be a failed relay. At the back of the Cooling chapter of the FSM it tell you how to test the fan system (it's easy), plus there's a circuit diagram.

The light's on to warn you the fan's not working!
