Performance Chip 2nd Generation 1988 NonTurbo

Whats the story behind these performance chips I see them sell on places like ebay. Do they really give you 20+ horsepower and how much additional wear does it put on your engine?

First of all, what kind of chips are we talking about? Are these done by a reputable company, or someone no one's heard of? Since its on Ebay, my guess is that they are a chip that someone sells claiming instant power gains, regardless. I'm not an expert, but I would think a chip would have to be tailored to the specific mods your car has, local conditions (weather, gas, etc), and a host of other things. It could be a company that does that, but I doubt it.

The thing they sell is a resistor in a tube. You wire it into your IAT sensor, which tricks the ECU into thinking you're getting cooler air. Whoopdie crap. It advances timing a hair or two. You'd be better of running a real cold air box.

yeah all that tricking your ecu into thinking the air is colder will achive is a richer than necissary fuel/air ratio. i dont know about s4s but s5s already have a tendency to run rich so they dont need any more encuragement. that resistor may even cause you to loose powere from baing too rich.

yeah advanced timing (more than air temp requires) sound like a realy good way to blow a apex seal.

My thoughts exactly. Your best bet, once again, is to quit faking your mods and do them for real.

Total cost of everything I'm using to make my cold air setup... about $25.
