Passing emissions, Ha, ha, ha...

So I live in Taxachusetts where emissions are strict as hell. I just got an S5 TII with no emissions equipment besides the precat and cat. Do I have a shot in hell at passing without the air pump, evaporative canister, and other crap? Also, someone mentioned pouring a few bottles of Dry Gas in the tank to make it run cleaner before getting it tested. It sounds like a bad idea but I'm up for anything at this point. The emissions system seems too complicated to source all the parts and try to re-assemble.

I don't think you have a shot, I'd try to find a hookup for a 'pass'. You could always give it a shot just to get a baseline if you're close then you can play around with little things like running alcohol, or maybe a new cat.

do you have a stock cat? if so you can pick up a pump for cheap ( i have one i'll let go) just hook it up, you'll need an ACV too, and a split air pipe, all of witch are pretty cheap

Supposedly running the air pump straight to the cat input with no ACV works just as well as having the ACV actually working.

The cat is original, so I just found out. I'm sure replacing that should help. So would fixing the air fuel ratio; it's running extremely rich for no damn good reason. What is an ACV? Air Control Valve? What about all the solenoids and crap?

How rich is "extremely rich" and how did you measure it? Our cars run very rich stock.

Emissions limits are adjusted for the year of the engine installed. So a new LS1 swapped in would yield stricter emissions than our tired 20-year old engines. (Even if we rebuild our engines.)

so they're adjusted but are not limited to the emissions standards at the time of manufactur?

that's a bit of a rip, but it could be worse

one of the big problems in the car world is california, as california is basically a world car market in itself, makers can't afford to ignore it, and have to make their cars conform to the crazy standard (thanks to rubber stamp governator)
personally i'd be happy if a lot of makers just started selling a few models there and ignoring them when they get to the good stuff

No, the standards are lower than factory new spec to account for aging. (At least in RI.)

The people who really get fucked in RI are the grandmothers with 1980s diesel Mercedes because they just enacted particulate emissions laws for diesel passenger vehicles and they have to be smogged yearly.

Thus, their emissions equipment has never been worked on or checked before so most of them would have to pay 1.5-2k to get into compliance.

I think car manufacturers should be required to invest more money in lower emissions and cleaner burning engines and fuels rather than just sticking an annoying system that breaks down and robs performance on the car.

I dunno how it works, but I heard that MA just adopted Cali's laws so it's gonna be a beast. Luckily the place I go to doesn't bother with a visual inspection. Anyhow, my way of measuring this is because I have an A/F guage that reads full rich when I'm on the gas at all, and while idling. I also get 14mpg, so that could be another indicator. The car also makes popping sounds when idling (I forget the real name for it) and backfires when downshifting, all which lead me to believe that it runs hella rich. Anyhow, I don't know if I even have an air control valve; I'll have to check that out, as well as the air pump and a new cat. It would also help if my exhaust weren't leaking everywhere...

I'm from Boston. You won't pass. I dont have any emissions, I failed by more than 3 times the limit.

Also, the emission machine will need a car with a 2 speed idle or something like that. I found a corolla that had it. So I "passed"

Might as well shell out some money to get it "passed". Easier that way.
