painting prose my car

so I had some problems with the clearcoat on the sunroof and top of the car, it was bubbling pretty bad. so i took my sander and took off the clear coat, then the first layer of red paint, the second layer of red, the 2nd coat of primer, then the first coat of primer, all the way to the bare metal.

last night i put on a good thick coat of primer and let it dry. unfortunately the car was under a tree and the squirrels dropped their nuts on the car. by this time the primer was dry, but dirty. so i cleaned it up with windex and a sock and prepped it with a paint brush for the first coat of paint.

the wind is about 15mph making it very very difficult to get a good coat down, but I managed a decent one. I am putting a purple black top on the car and leaving the rest red. it should look good once i am done. I need to let this coat dry and head to the store for more paint.

I may wait until tonight before i do the remaining coats, seeing as the wind usually dies down to about 3-5mph by 8:00pm

I'll put up a pic or two once my camera is returned to me.

FYI, you get a better quality coat of paint if you lay several light coats instead of a "good thick one". Believe me on that one. I know it's tempting, especially when you get to the clear to spray that crap as thick as it'll go without running, but you'll be days sanding the orange peel out. You want several light coats, again and again.

And for best results don't do it outside under a tree. People are amazed that my paintjobs look as good as they do with as little concern as I have for where I paint because I don't set up a booth at all or rent out an operating room.

If you park the car square in the middle of a two car garage with enough room to walk around it, your overspray will die out before it hits the walls so you won't mess anything up. Even if the tail of the car hangs out a little bit, you'll get a better paint job than doing it under a tree.

Purple and red oughta sure get you noticed though.

yep, I don't have a garage to do it in, just a driveway...it's where i do all my fiberglass/projects/repairs. it is uncomfortable but i work with what i have. I actually put two light coats of primer...i just didn't wait two hours for the first one to dry. then today i put on one coat of the deep dark purple. i am going to do a black trim around the car to bring the two colors together. it is super windy outside.

No problem, I've been there before. Spraybombing a junkyard fender in my driveway so I don't stick out too much. You can get pretty good results that way if you're careful. Watch out for clears though, because they can take a long time to dry, so that's more chances that something will get stuck in it. Also, I wouldn't even sand the clear if you use spraycan clear, because it would take about 18 cans to get enough clear on a roof to be able to level it without burning through.

Not at the moment, I've actually got 5 cars stuffed in my driveway, and 1 in the garage that doesn't run, and I'm about to have a sixth. :P I've got a convertible top to install, two fuel tanks to clean, some bodywork, a pair of shocks, a fuel pump, an exhaust manifold gasket and a set of lowering springs. Then I get to help my friend reassemble his 68 Camaro. Otherwise, I'd help you out
