Talking Painting my car

Any tip or thing I should watch for while painting my GXL. I have been slowly stripping the car to bare metal with paint stripper and then wiping Triple Etch( a metal cleaner and helps the paint stick) on the metal. I am spraying the car in gray primer. Any info please

I bought the Painting/Bodywork and Upkeep book from Haynes, for i think $11 or 12 bucks... we used it to paint our oldsmobile, and it was rather helpful... I'm just about to start painting my rex too

There is no need to strip to bare metal on a car that is just being repainted.

Triple Etch cleans the metal and make the paint stick better. It put a zinc coating on the metal to prevent rusting

Flash rust, which occurs following stripping to bare metal and when you perform the cleansing rinse of the metal etch.

What primer are you using? I hope a quality self-etching 2 component Epoxy such as PPG DP-40. Generic "Grey Primer" is not designed as a overall prep primer.

Good advice I was just about to ring in with the same thought.

don't touch wet paint, and paint in a well ventilated area. There's so much, i don't know where to begin.

If the existing paint was basically solid, then taking it down to bare metal is actually worse then leaving it on...

As others have said, there is so much to painting a car that it would be difficult to post it all. I suggest that you take a good body-shop-guy out for lunch, or pick up a book on automotive paint.

I did most of the prep work for my own paint job, but had my body guy spray it. I would rather be tortured then go through that again...6 months of sanding and blocking and filling and sanding and sanding and sanding....99% of the work is in the prep, and it the prep that determines the outcome.

My dad knows a lot about autobody so the info is not a problem. I was just asking for any tips or things to watch out for.

To later I have already started to. The hood, front fenders, light covers and the driver door have already been stripped to bare metal.

You wont be able to duplicate the OEM primer, its an Electrostatically applied finish.

SINCE you have stripped to bare metal, you need to use a 2 component epoxy primer. PPG DP-40 is EXCELLANT.

you also need to go to www,paintucation.com its a web board for DIY auto-painting. All your questions and MORE can and will be answered there. I also frequent that site
