i use a brush and kerosene or carburetor cleaner to get all the surface crap off. enough to get down to the base metal so the paint will not flake off.
just takes some time and elbow grease, stay away from bead blasting or media blasting, **** get's everywhere... one thing you don't need is some bead you missed in cleaning getting sucked up in the oil system and scoring up the e-shaft when you get it running.

Varsol = White spirit
Nismo: My engine is going to look like that one
But do you only clean the housings and sides before paint or do you sand them down ?
The paint doesnt need to be very shiny, but it must look good
Im grinding and sanding down my manifolds now so theyll be shiny

The best way to initially clean the irons/housings is to use a parts washer and then rinse and wash with dish soap. Use hot water on the final rinse to make drying much easier.
At that poing, you can paint without any additional prep.
But if you are using metallic colours or candy, then you need to smooth things out. In this case I use duct tape to mask off all the areas I don't want to damage and then use a wire wheel on a drill to shine everything up. Then clean it with brake cleaner a few times and paint.
If you powder coat, you need to media blast. Make SURE to protect the sealing and friction surfaces with thick layers of duct tape.

Okey, I think ill do the first one Aaron Cake..
Powder coat is mutch cooler but its also THAT mutch more work. I planned to blast the irons/houses. The ide i had for doing that was to make "seal-discs" out of aluminum and plugs for all the other holes. The surface doesnt need to be smooth to powder coat? Blasting is enaugh? what is media blast btw? glass/plastic?

Powder needs a little bit of a "tooth" to adhere to, like paint does.
Media blasting just refers to "sandblasting" with other material. Beads, glass, walnut shells, etc.
