painting the car
i want to paint my car the rx8 blue. so i got an estimate from a local paint shop and they said 2800 for the whole deal. they said i could prep it my self but it would still be expensive. so i went to another place and they were more kind on prices, the only thing really expnsive is the paint. is there a really nice blue out there that is cheap or can you guys recomenda different color that would look really nice and not be so heavy on the check book.

Most of the cost of a paint job is labour, I can't fathom why one colour in the same paint brand and quailty and style ie 2 stage urathane or a candy etc would cost considerably more. I think you're getting bullshitted on the cost of that colour vs other colours.

I work at an auto paint place...
The paint line that we sell and i like personally is r-m diamont. This is fairly high end 2&3 stage paint. When people come inside for supplies for 1 car(not truck/suv), they hardly ever break $600 and spend as little as $200 for lower end lines.
All of the work to painting a car is the prep work... 90% of the labor easily or more.
Spraying takes a good eye and a steady arm and a little experience. Single stage paints are really easy to spray, base/clear and tristage get a bit harder
I know plenty of painters that love to spray cars allready prepped because it takes them 1 night of occasional work and a little cleanup and there done. If the prep work is crap they will tell you its gonna look bad beforehand. Honestly i wouldnt pay someone over $250 to spray a 7 unless they were really good. Find someone small time is my advice, the big places will rip you off and you cant really expect any better results either.

I checked into the price of that color "winning blue" and it was substantially more than other colors I was looking at. Still have not picked a color for the miata but you might want to check the blue that was on 1994 dodge dakotas, REALLY nice.

They will ship paint. The Mazda blue you want is Winning blue Mazda Paint code 27B
You will need around a quart or two for the color coat and then probably about a gallon of clear.
