I can probably rent the spraygun for cheaper, but how noxious are the fumes??

I don't want my neighbor calling the cops because his kids are gagging / fainting

I'm sure the EPA (environmental protection agency) would fine the heck out of me if the cops get called.

it does smell a bit,,but i wear a protective mask because if you spray clearcoat without it,,,,,well you die plain and simple,,,clear coat is like a liquid plastic bag and if you breath it in,,it basically clearcoats your lungs.

but as far as neighbors and such unless they are standing right next to your exhaust fan and sucking in real hard they won't have any medical problems.

i don't know of anyone that rents spray guns,,but i may be wrong.

and yes the EPA would have a field day with you,,they would with me too if anyone in my neighborhood had a problem with it.

but i did it in the middle of a weekday when everyone is at work and school

Hey that sounds pretty good.

I though about making a paint booth in my garage with a few 2x4 studs and plastic sheeting. I'm hoping they rent the full face protective masks as well. I'm assuming the mask has a breathing tube you'll need to run somewhere outside the paintbooth. Mabey I can pick up a cheap gasmask off of ebay with tube and just extend the tube outside the garage. That means I have to rig up something to keep the gasmask tube off the car as I move around.

Only problem is exhaust fan means you BETTER be filtering the incoming air to keep from sucking crap in and ruining the paint. Mabey a typical 20x25" filter from home depot will work on that. I'm assuming a 3 foot exhaust fan would be enough.

So I have the paint booth covered, I've already bought the "how to" books on sanding & coating.

The next problem is removing the OEM paint. That requires noxious/strong liquids that eats through just about any plastic right? I could always have the car acid dipped but then I might as well go for a complete restoration and tear down the car if I dip it.

Man you're SO close to a complete restoration by removing the engine & re-doing the engine bay paint you might as well go all the way and strip the car

well you don't have to remove the paint,,that is what they make sealers and primers for,,they bond to the old paint and make a suitable surface for the new paint.

and as for the paint mask,,they don't have any outside breathing tube,,they jsut have very fine filters that keep the paint from getting to you,,you can breath very well through them and can't tell the air in the mask from clean outdoors air,,and they only cost $30-40
