Paging Two Members: Switch Question

Hi all! This is multipart story/question.

I have a 1989 'Vert that uses the switch to lower the top on the surround like the '88, unlike the 90/91.

I happened to put in a new battery a few months ago (backwards) and after that, my headlight switch would turn lights on but not raise the headlight itself. The headlight switch above that worked, so I figured I fried a relay if nothing else.

This weekend I got my hands on a switch set from an '88 vert. To my surprise, I plugged in the left side switch (lights, retractor switch, and defrost) and the headlights worked fine! Up and down no issues. However the retractor switch (middle switch) and defrost button did not work.

So. Question 1: On the second set of switches, is there a way to test and/or repair any of the following: retractor switch and defrost.

Question 2: On the original switch, is there a way to repair the headlight switch (flip headlights up function...lights come on fine)?

Question 3: Right side switches. On my set from the 88, NONE of the switches are working: Hazard, top, and wipers. Now could this be to some type of difference between the harnessess (I believe on Icemarks site it talks about different switches being incomptible), or are the switches toast, or might be a way to repair them using Icemarks most excellent instructions?

Thank you and if I am not being clear I will be happy to take any type of photos or clarify to the best of my ability.

Headlight switches are the same as far as wiring regardless of series or model.

the only headlight switch remotely different is the headlight switch on the 10thAE, and that is only because it has a push button for the headlight cleaners.

Wiper switches are also the same between the 88 convertible and the 89 convertible, the only different being that the 88 convertible (as all S4 models) will flash the hazard indicator on the switch when the Hazards are on, while the S5 models do not. As far as wiring you would even put in a wiper switch from a coupe and have the wipers and hazard lights function fine.

So to answer question one:
Chances are diode D3 in the headlight switch is smoked.. not easy to fix, you need to remove the circuit board to get too it. And it is very very rare to have the defrost blow. I can only assume that it blew out the timer chip, so that would need to be replaced.

So to answer question two:
again probably a blown diode, but this time probably D4 diode or a blown out retractor relay in the headlight switch (if both the cleaner switch and headlight switch do not raise the headlights- I'd look at the relay first) and again like the diode you need to remove the circuit board to get to the relay.

On question 3:
Did you replace the harness or something... are you sure both ends of the harness are plugged in, and that there are no blown fuses in the car. I am assuming the turn signal works, but just the hazards do not. If that is the case grounding the hazard wire will confirm the switch is bad. You can also confirm switch operation by using the diagnostic connector for the roof found at the passengers shock tower. All the switch and power out puts for the top are found there, and can be tested without removing the switch.

And as per the forum rules... PM someone when you want their attention... do not post their names in thread titles.
