oxygen sensor wires?

my o2 sensor harness somehow got down low and touched the header. needless to say the its melted. i peeled back the heat shrink and found two wires- a black insulated wire and an un-insulated steel wire. so which one goes to the o2 sensor, and can i just get spade connectors and re-attach it? also, is there something wrong? my check engine doesnt come on. wouldnt come on if theres no signal from the sensor? any help is appreciated. i did a search but didnt really find what i was looking for.

the black insulated wire carries the signal. the uninsulated part is the shielding, because it's shielded wire. if you replace it only use shielded wire, won't work properly without it.

so your saying use the un-insulated wire to hook up back to the o2 sensor not the black insulated one?
