NM overheating, no speedo, broken sunroof?

Hey guys, I'm back!
couldnt stay away. Just picked up a s4 na for a great deal, car runs, 130xxx miles. minor dings. now for the bad, This car is overheating. I had about 25 min of drive time, and notice the temp gauge off the charts. got home, let it sit, added coolant, it boiled into the catch can, boiled out of the top, and just started steaming with anger. I noticed some leakage from the water pump area, and I'm wondering if a faulty pump could be my culprit. Ive never had actual steam come from the hose in the catch can, and I'm wondering why there is such an intense pressure build up. few other, speedo isnt working...at all... nor is the sun roof, I can hear the motor working, but nothing moves..obviously thats the least of my concerns right now.
thanks in advance

i would pull the thermostat out and let it idle and watch the gauge. is the stock fan and shroud there? if its goin crazy with the thermostat out its prolly a coolant seal.

day 2, replaced thermostat and flushed the coolant, let the car idle for about 10 min and all looked good. hopped in and took her for a drive and everything seemed fine. in the last 5 min of the drive, the temp gauge shot up and the engine was overheating again....

Is it just jumping up at once, or climbing up? Is the system fully bled out? When the gauge sender hits air its readings can cause it to spike or drop.

it was gradually climbing. I re filled the system with coolant, started the car, let it idle for about 10 min, then started playing with the throttle from outside the car. notice the seal from the block to the water pump was spraying coolant out every time i hit the throttle. new gaskets on the way. hopefully this solves my issue..
