Overheating Issue

I'm looking at a '87 with the 13b engine in it, looks like a good deal from the price but it has one problem that makes it sound like junk.

It overheats on the current owner after 30 minutes of driving. The way it sounds from the buyers guide that is linked too up in the FAQ i should have read before posting is that overheating is the devil and junks an engine. therefore... is the car worth anyhwere close to $1,000 with a junk engine in it?

also, i have a line on a 13b with a cracked apex seal that looks like it would be able to just drop in once rebuilt, with the two combined, would you think it to be a decent build project?

thanks in advnace

Not enough information given there for us to be able to determine that. Overheating can be attributed to something as simple as a bad thermostat, to a busted coolant seal.

But if the engine has a LOT of trouble starting, or smokes up a lot on start-up, or while its running...then u should be worried....

Well, the Wankel design will not tolerate overheating from what I understand. This might be salvageable for a little while. If you don't mind me for asking. How much is (was) the car?

editation...

thanks for the replies guys... edited the original post after reading the buyers guide stuff in the FAQ.

The seller is asking $2,000 but said upfront he would take $1,500 and with teh overheating issues i would think he would take $1,000 cash, since cash talks louder then the rest.

The other 13b engine i'm talking about, with the cracked apex seal has a $300 pricetag attached to it atm, but its been advertised for quite some time now.

Unless the body and interior are perfect, and everything else is perfect, then I'd say walk away from it. That seems like too much for a car like that. I think for that price I'd expect one that was mechanically perfect. Maybe a little body work needed maybe a somewhat worn interior.
Mine was $500, and the parts/engine donor $200

Well, thats what i needed to hear. Those where my feelings anyway, and the seller has done a lot of mods to the interior so its not anything close to orignal or in great shape.

I guess i should pursue the $750 84 that is in town and the $300 one that was wrecked but still runs.

Or p'haps the '84 that is in perfect condition inside and out w/ leather and sunroof and all the goodies that they whant $4,000 for...
