Overheating

G'Day all,

My '87 GXL (non-turbo) has had an overheating problem for a couple of years now. I can drive it about 20Km or so before the coolant starts to boil furiously and the overflow tank starts to spill over. When it cools back down, the excess coolant that has been displaced into the overflow tank is not sucked back into the engine/rad.

I have checked all the obvious areas including removing the thermostat, removing and flushing the rad and having it checked by my local rad store, removing and checking the water pump, checking the thermostatic fan operation, re-installing the under engine air-scoop etc., but all to no avail. I'm running short of ideas now! Anybody have any suggestions. I've had the vehicle since new (Dec '86) and it only has about 145,000Km on the original engine.

Any and all suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks guys, a rebuild is pretty much the conclusion that I had come to. I gather it is something to do with the 'O' ring seals at either end of the engine block. Anyone know of a good engine re-builder in the southern Ontario region (Toronto area, preferably)?
